This is a historical map, created to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the
Stockton and Darlington Railway, which opened for passengers in Septmeber 1825.
It is now 1826 and four new companies are competing to extend the line across
Durham County (based on two different antique maps), and a little beyond.
Companies start with £20 and bid for the four sections of existing (grey) line.
They must then expand from there. Due to the limitations of early steam engines,
hills and mountains are harder to cross, and the standard line is limited in speed.
See the map legend for further details.
