The South Downs Way is a scenic route across the South Downs National Park between
Winchester and Eastbourne. The route is often walked, cycled or driven, but never traversed
by train, until now...
This is a non-standard map in two ways. Its long, thin dimensions mean there are pinch points which make it hard for all four companies to run the full length of the Way. There is also a requirement to visit beauty spots along the way during the races.
Three games are underway with the version 1 map and a revised map will be created based on player feedback.
The map is probably best played with the leapfrog rule. Games are being played with and without this rule for testing purposes.
With one game finished and two nearning the end, work on V2 is underway:
Changes for draft 1: Fernhurst, Selborne and Firle spellings corrected, Winchester and Eastbourne now single hexes, narrow pinch-point made easier to get through (rather than mandating leapfrog), rule on bus connections removed, turntables kept but penalty reduced to 1 pip, Seven Sisters moved east of Cuckmere River.
Changes for draft 2: Droxford removed and Kingston added for better balance, Rottingdean moved one hex and a second Brighton bus connection added.
Changes for draft 3: Spellings of Binsted and Alice Holt Forest.
Changes for draft 4: Changes to S3, S4 and S6 bus links. Add Ebernoe Common, move Chanctonbury Ring. Extra green hexes at G46, H75 and I76. Not entirely authentic change to River Arun for playability.
Changes for draft 5: More changes under consideration.
